A New Source for Bike Parts

We took a canoe trip down the Seine River this afternoon. In addition to rocks and trees blocking the stream, there were, in places, an alarming number of bicycles and shopping carts.

The Geek fished one smaller one out of the river.
These are probably stolen bikes but the police don't have the time or the resources to be dredging the river to find them. And if they are insured, they have undoubtedly been replaced.
It now is hanging in the garage until we decide what to do with it.

Why do people toss things in rivers? I don't get it.

I don't understand either. It seems such a waste- of time and useful items and the river.
The group Save our Seine goes out every spring and pulls tons of stuff out and every year, it fills back up. The people who toss it in should go and help clean it up. It might may them feel valuable; they probably don't feel that way now.

We do this too (annual river cleanup) on the Cowichan River, but I've only found old beer bottles and candy wrappers. Its great thing to do, but I'd much rather find a bicycle than old beer cans!

Maybe some kids were watching the Discovery Channel and thought that they'd help the environment and create an artificial reef...
